Penny Serenade (1941) [Drama] [Romance]

“Penny Serenade” is a 1941 film melodrama starring Irene Dunne, Cary Grant, Beulah Bondi, and Edgar Buchanan. It was directed by George Stevens and written by Martha Cheavens and Morrie Ryskind. It depicts the story of a loving couple who must overcome adversity to keep their marriage and raise a child. Grant was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance.

While listening to a recording of “Penny Serenade,” Julie Gardiner Adams (Irene Dunne) begins reflecting on her past. Roger (Cary Grant) and Julie Adams suffer a tragedy when she miscarries in an earthquake during their 1923 stay in Japan. They are told that she cannot have children. They request to adopt a two-year old boy, but ultimately adopt a much younger girl. They struggle to make ends meet and to retain their parental rights when Roger loses his job. When the little girl dies suddenly, the emotional strain threatens to destroy their marriage. Songs mark episodes in the action from records from their collection—the title refers to a song of the same name. In the end, they are offered the opportunity to adopt a little boy who matches their original request, miraculously saving their marriage.

Directed and porduced by George Stevens, written by Martha Cheavens and Morrie Ryskind, starring Irene Dunne, Cary Grant, Beulah Bondi and Edgar Buchanan.

  1. Romantic film> 1941 was the year I came into this world, Robots or Alien Ets if they exist, would they understand the emotions in this film.(!?) HUMANITY, maybe now has Fluoride, GMOs and progesterone that shuts down the OXYTOCIN CYCLE to stop romantic attraction between opposite genders. POPULATION REDUCTION ON PURPOSE !?

  2. I never cry at a movie. Or on a TV show. But this is so beautiful with my 2 favorite actors. And Applejack. How a tragedy can be overcome, and life starts again. Don't miss it.

  3. i have collected some of Cary Grants film but this is the first time that I have seen these. I cried as i watch the last seen of An Affair to remember but this film is really something. A box of tissue is really needed. thank you for this

  4. You're not saying anything that pro-lifers don't already know. This has been going on for years. This is just one facet of the spiderweb. Keep looking at all the other things going on that are anti-human.

  5. REPLY TO "UTUBETOMMY" See, "FEARPORN*, = NO ECONOMIC GROWTH PERIOD" The money to help people with serious problems is available if people in need know where to look. Generally, unless they have serious emotional or mental health issues.

  9. Sexually Alluring Women were In The Old Movies. Do women need to undress, to be sexually alluring. The Answer is No. If a woman wears the right Clothes, she can be very Alluring, Sexually. The Women in the old movies wore clothes, especially designed for them, to make them Sexually Alluring. Watch this Video:

  10. I've loved this movie since I first saw it on TCM a long time ago. There are many scenes I love in this tearjerker.  The scene in which Edgar Buchanan ( Applejack) gives the baby a bath, and calls her Seraphina, gets me every time.

  11. This movie has got me crying.  What a sweetie  pie baby when he bought her back home to her mom to stay forever!! The best part when he was pleading with that judge for his little girl!!

  12. This was a very good movie. The quality was a tad rough which caused a few pauses when reading the letter. Even still it was worth the viewing. It had funny moments and it definitely went whole hog on the tearjerkers but really good just the same.

  13. Mrs. Oliver's voice is so lovely at the end–almost angelic, like a gift from God…exactly when they needed it. These two could act anything together. The Awful Truth and Penny Serenade are two of the best films ever.

  14. "when something came along that hit us hard enough, we couldn't handle it." the final test of a marriage or any partnership.  But we are not made of steel are we? What a little buried treasure this was.  Thank you.
