The film stars Freddie Bartholomew, Dolores Costello, and C. Aubrey Smith. The first film produced by David O. Selznick’s Selznick International Pictures, it was the studio’s most profitable film until Gone With the Wind. The film is directed by John Cromwell.

Plot: Young Cedric “Ceddie” Errol (Freddie Bartholomew) and his widowed mother, whom he calls “Dearest” (Dolores Costello), live frugally in 1880s Brooklyn after the death of his father. Cedric’s prejudiced English grandfather, the Earl of Dorincourt (C. Aubrey Smith), had long ago disowned his son for marrying an American.

The earl sends his lawyer Havisham (Henry Stephenson) to bring Ceddie to England. As the earl’s sons are all dead, Ceddie is the heir to the title. Mrs. Errol accompanies her son to England, but is not allowed to live at Dorincourt castle. For Cedric’s happiness, she does not tell him it is because of his grandfather’s bigotry. The earl’s lawyer is impressed with the young widow’s wisdom. However, the earl expresses skepticism when Mr. Havisham informs him that Cedric’s mother will not accept an allowance from him.

Cedric soon wins the hearts of his stern grandfather and everyone else. The earl hosts a grand party to proudly introduce his grandson to British society, notably his sister Lady Constantia Lorridaile (Constance Collier).

After the party, Havisham informs the Earl that Cedric is not the heir apparent after all. American Minna Tipton (Helen Flint) insists her son Tom (Jackie Searl) is the offspring of her late husband, the earl’s eldest son. Heartbroken, the earl accepts her apparently valid claim, though Tom proves to be a rather obnoxious lad.

Fortunately for Ceddie, his friend Dick Tipton (Mickey Rooney) recognises Minna from her newspaper picture. He takes his brother Ben, Tom’s real father, to England and disproves Minna’s claim. The earl apologises to Ceddie’s mother and invites her to live with the delighted Ceddie on his estate.

  1. "Ceddie" could have informed the Earl right away that his mum, Doris Costello, was a relative of Elvis Costello and everything would have been peachy.

  2. Amazing channel. Is it possible to upload the movies with subtitles? For the people who are not english-native would be really good.

  3. Very gracious of you to put this up for all of us. I've loved this movie since I was a little girl when we lived in San Leandro, CA and I saw it for the first time. He's the sweetest child. I'm in my 60's now and any time I could I'd watch this older man in whatever there was going. Excellent actors. Turned a cold brute into a human being that little boy. He's a credit to his parents. But even the evil witch was excellent in her part. That poor father looking for his boy. Personally, I would have prosecuted her to the fullest extent of the law. And the boy would have gone to his father. She's a black hole on humanity. Songs

  4. Почему нет русского перевода ? Такие хорошие фильмы , так хочется посмотреть

  5. Selznick's first film after leaving RKO; he brought master movie composer Max Steiner with him. Steiner would move his base to Warners the following year, but have a clause in his contract to write music for Selznick whenever needed. Selznick would get major studios to let him 'borrow' actors under contract to star in his movies. It didn't hurt that MGM boss Louis B. Mayer was his father-in-law.

  6. Some say these kinds of movies are corny. I think a little corn is good for the soul. It sure won't give you nightmares. It's kind of like comfort food. Sometime, check out the PBS miniseries version. It's lengthy, but wonderful and well portrayed with a lot more detail to the story.

  7. I love and appreciate the movies you present they are indeed the best. I’m an old movie buff and I’d like to know, would you happen to have the movie, ‘The Strip’ with Mickey Rooney? Last night we watched, ‘Quicksand’ Mr. Rooney’s character sort of reminded me of The Strip.
Oh, by the way I also watched ‘Little Lord Fauntleroy’ for the first time and it was a beautiful heart wrenching movie, thank you again, your channel is the best!

  8. I'm sorry but while watching I havean overwhelming desire to kick Freddyinto the middle of next week. Sir C. Aubrey though is always worth watching.

  9. Thank you. This was the best version ever. The cast from beginning to end were all brilliant actors. Despite all the advances and technological wonders there is little to compare with the excellence of the films, actors and all those behind the scenes of the golden age of Hollywood. Dolores Costello still had that quality she had in silent films. Magnificent. Only wish it had been longer. Cheers

  10. Love this movie. One of my many favorite classics. They don't make them like this any more. Excellent acting. Brilliant, Wonderful movie. Thank- you for sharing this original version.
