The Ape is a 1940 American horror film made for Monogram Pictures, co-written by Curt Siodmak and starring Boris Karloff.
Dr. Bernard Adrian is a kindly mad scientist who seeks to cure a young woman’s polio. He needs spinal fluid from a human to complete the formula for his experimental serum. Meanwhile, a vicious circus ape has broken out of its cage, and is terrorizing the townspeople.
The Ape eventually breaks into Dr. Adrian’s lab. The Doctor manages to kill it before any harm can come to himself. However, the spinal fluids he requires to perform his experiments have all been destroyed during the struggle between him and the Ape.
Doctor Adrian then concocts an idea: he will tear off the ape’s flesh and use its skin to disguise himself as the escaped circus animal and murder townspeople in order to extract their spinal fluid. Thus the murders will be blamed on the Ape and he, himself, will manage to avoid any suspicion. However, one of his attacks towards the film’s end is unsuccessful; he is fatally knifed and the Ape’s “true identity” is revealed.

Mr. Holliday (the owner of the circus) was he the grandfather in Lassie series? He looks so familiar but I just can’t place him.
He sounds as if he would prefer her to be in her wheelchair so that He can take care of her.
Spinal injections are extremely painful!!
@ 22:38 Looks like a cross between a bear & a warthog 😕
Interesting that the Dr is using stem cells from the spine(s) in the 40's.
Thanks for sharing ;<))
“Big time doctors making a lot of money on nervous women….” No truer statement ever been uttered.
Doctors have done this for years now they have malpractice insurance! And if that fails…pharma research and pill peddling! For a pay check!
KARLOFF – no matter the budget or script limitations, Boris gave it 100 percent. Oh, by the way, Maris Wrixon was very lovely. (The opening credits and music score was more appropriate for a The Stooges short.)
Pretty run of the mill and cheesy for a golden age monster movie, but Karloff makes it better. It could be the shittiest movie ever, but if it has Karloff, his performance would stand out, and better the film.
39:55 reminds me of a Bigfoot encounter.
One of my favorites. Thanks!
thanks, this film was ok !
Boris Karloff always gives everything he's got, he puts so much soul into the character he plays, a true professional.
That opening credits music is totally Bizarre. Especially for whats supposed to be a horror flick.
1940 I wonder if bkarloff new England was goin 2 war,how he felt about it at time,i don't no if this is b4 or after the bombings

I love this movie, too. Seems like the circus music for the opening titles could have had a more appropriate, ominous, horror feel to it, but it is a low budget quickie after all. Silly fun.
