Enemy of Women (1944) [Full Movie]

Young Dr. Paul Joseph Goebbels, an unsuccessful playwright, is forced, in order to support himself, to take a position as tutor in the household of Herr Quandt. His first attempt to force himself upon women comes when he becomes interested in a young actress, Maria Brandt, daughter of Colonel Brandt at whose home he is lodging. He is driven from the house by Colonel Brandt. That night, acting as an usher for a meeting of the new German Socialist Party, Goebbels hears Hitler speak, and becomes an ardent follower. He is made propaganda head, becomes known as the “Scoundrel of Berlin”, and his machinations strike terror into the hearts of innocent girls. Maria Brandt, who is working as a bit player in a theatre in Hannover, again meets Goebbels. Through his efforts, although unknown to her, Maria is made an overnight star. He then procures a contract for her at the famous UFA studios of Berlin. Maria, who has become interested in a young doctor, Hans Traeger, shuns Goebbels’ attentions.

  2. see Goebbels go from unproduced playwright to propaganda tsar in tight, concise scenes. watch a dopey actress rise to stardom on a nazi machination. then the romance takes over, but you know that won't last. the ending is thoroughly chilling and could only have been written/directed by someone who knew the war.

  3. I have my German maiden name to date. It is a name that no one would want to possess, especially a woman. I jokingly tell others that "I have tried to change my name twice, with no lasting results." Obviously ~ I've been divorced twice. It's funny that some pick up on my humor, while others have no clue. My german name in English means 'Wartree'. My grandparents were brought over by their parents before WWII, but I have very little knowledge of my ancestry. I know that my grandparents were Lutheran, never part of the Nazi regime & never Jewish. My grandmother was also from a strong German background. My grandfather & father were highly intelligent & gifted in subjects such as mathematics, geometry, algebra, physics , etc. They were both intelligent in engineering & mechanics, as well as teaching & explaining their expertise with gusto to others! Another idiom was their huge love & involvement in sports which enhanced their physical beauty from a constant state of energy & discipline. They all had extremely beautiful blue eyes. I hope none of my ancestors were this cruel to people whom they hated with such a vengeance !

  4. This film is interesting as much for the irony as much as anything else. It's an obvious piece of Hollywood propaganda, albeit one with some truth in it, written by an American screenwriter of German descent who worked in Germany until he became a target of Goebbels and the Nazis. The irony is that 60 years later, the US and Hollywood mirrors the Nazi state with all of its propaganda, lies, deceptions, censorship and tyranny. They're no different in their nature or agenda, just better at the tactics. They're less obvious and far more insidious. They also have more wealth and power behind them. They're far more dangerous than the Nazis ever were even if they don't cause as much death and destruction.

  5. Joseph Goebbels as Minister for Propaganda was all over the German moving picture industry in the 1930's. He was especially interested in the actresses and starlets. His promiscuity gained him the moniker 'Billy-goat of Babelsberg', the Berlin suburb of Babelsberg being the 'Beverly Hills of Germany'.

  6. For those who do not know the background story of this movie:
This is an American wartime propaganda movie. It was also the way for director Alfred Zeisler to get revenge at Goebbels, who had destroyed Zeisler's directing career in pre-war Germany. Zeisler (who was Jewish-German but born in Chicago) had to flee Germany in 1935, because of the Neurenberg racial laws, together with his wife, the Dutch born German actress Lien Deyers (also half-Jewish). Zeisler and Deyers fled to the US (Hollywood) in 1939. They divorced and Zeisler continued as actor and director. Deyers' (who was Germany's Mary Pickford before the war) career was over by then.

  7. "Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you,and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake."

  8. it seems that those nazi fools still had the time and spirit to make propaganda films in 1944, just a year before being utterly pummeled by the USA/USSR

  9. When I come to rule the world, I want all this petty bickering to stop immediately. And tell that kid in the third row to sit down and shut up.

  10. I see so many motion pictures that were made DURING WWII. I find this baffling!! What with rationing in effect, I don't see how this was possible.

  11. Meine Damen und Herren, if you are here not to watch the movie (of course it's American WWII propaganda, and I think this is quite interesting example), but to argue with each other in a very rude and insulting manner – please get off this page. Thank you for your attention.
