Black Magic
Starring Orson Welles, 1949
Novelist Alexander Dumas tells his writer-son of Joseph Balsamo, a gypsy boy in southern France who was embittered because his parents were wrongfully hanged and he himself was tortured by the order of Viscount de Montagne. Years later, the man, a carnival charlatan, attracts the attention of Dr. Mesmer, a pioneer in the study of hypnotism……..

I didn't know I was being treated to Alexander Dumas what a wordsmith.
Alexander Dumas thisauthor wrote Count of Monte Cristo, The Man in the Iron Mask and The Three Muskaters all excellent stories. I enjoyed this about hypnosis the power of the mind. Thank you I enjoyed this! 👩🦳 I have been hypnotised not to have pain in childbirth and I didn't he was a European doctor,! Very powerful technique!
Excitingly,
This movie is so wonderful Orson Welles said it was the most fun he ever had making a film
Super flick.
I'm going to say it even if no one else will. Orson Welles was sexy as fuck in this movie.
"a romantic tryst", I'll have to remember that one. Cracking movie.
That was so bad but kinda enjoyable. Orson Wells and his big azzzzz in leggings…..lol. 👀
This is a true underrated gem of a film. It explores themes of hypnotism and prejudice against gypsies, as well as lust for power. Stephen Bekassy is so amazingly evil as the Viscount de Montagne, who sentences Joseph Balsalmo's parents to hang just for being gypsies and then sends young Joseph to the whipping post, with orders to blind him when the whipping is over. Besides Orson Welles, who was always outstanding no matter what role he took on, the film also features character actor Akim Tamiroff and Valentina Cortese, who would go on to become a respected Italian actress. The plot to seize control of the throne of France is pure vintage Dumas. A great film, thanks for posting!
Silly little fairy tale~ waste of an hour & a half!
Welles is hypnotic. I could listen to him speak all day and night.
Lointaine mais très bonne adaptation du joseph balsamique de Dumas.
Nancy Guild…gorgeous, and talented…why didn't MGM realize that?
Peace Cherub Delcroix! Thank you for this gem of a movie! I love 😍 it!! One of my students just sent a picture of it to me this evening. I looked the movie up and enjoyed it from beginning to end! It reminds me of my other favorites:
Svengali
Rasputin (1993 HBO movie)
Rasputin, the Mad Monk ( 1965 Christopher Lee)
Dark Forces aka Harlequin (1980)
Dark Tower (1940’s movie)
