Life with Father (1947) IRENE DUNNE

Movie Class by PizzaFLIX: The film LIFE WITH FATHER (1947) was adapted from the 1939 Broadway play, which was based on Clarence Day’s autobiographical stories about his family and father, a governor on the New York Stock Exchange. The Broadway production ran for 3,224 performances and still holds the record as the longest-running non-musical play in Broadway history.

Stars: William Powell, Irene Dunne, Elizabeth Taylor
Director: Michael Curtiz

In late 19th-century NYC, a stockbroker strives to maintain authority over his bustling household, but it’s his wife who truly rules the roost.

TRIVIA: Since both leads demanded top billing, half of the released prints billed Dunne first and the other half listed Powell first. First-run theaters were required to these alternate prints and advertising alternated the same way.

  1. Old movies are magic.
Have you noticed how pretty and romantic the women looked?
Now watch American women in modern movies. There is nothing romantic about them.

  2. Between the plandemic and inflation I needed to see this wonderful movie again. I'm trying to get back my sense of humor.

  3. I love old movies. I really do. But this was painful to listen to since this entire movie script was basically yelling and arguing from beginning to end. There was hardly any break from the high tension and constant back and forth.

  4. "Mother, what's folderol?" LOL "If they want to roam like the gypsies, lend them a hand, keep them roaming" LOL So many funny one-liners. Love this movie so much!

  5. This is on the TOP of my list of favorites~

  6. Clarence was such a hilarious character to play, and William Powell did a splendid job. I did not realize Elizabeth Taylor was Mary. What a wonderful hilarious movie,
