End-time atmosphere in 1964: A nuclear war has wiped out almost all life on earth. Only the residents of Australia and the crew of the American submarine “Sawfish” escaped the destruction. But the radioactive cloud is getting closer, and Captain Dwight Towers sets out with the “Sawfish” to explore it. His news is devastating: the radiation cloud is absolutely deadly. As time flies, everyone tries in their own way to deal with the near end.

On The Beach + Failsafe. Best films on the end of the world.
There is still time… brother
this scenario could never happen today..With Australia a vassal state of America, they would be destroyed in a nuclear war… All Australia had to do was stay neutral but they just couldn't do it..Pity them…
No other animal craps so close to where they eat. Humans are capable of great stupidity.
If not for that stupid song this would be a good movie.
This film should be shown in all the highschools throughout the World, every year.
Ava Garner was so beautiful in her early years, but alcohol made her look older than 36 here. They didn’t know the dangers of drinking/smoking, and many died too young!????
That waltzing Matilda repeatedly getting louder and louder is VERY annoying. ????????????????????
I have a friend who’s husband was in the navy. They have two boys who are both grown and married. However, when they were younger her husband would be gone for months at a time. He would be gone on a submarine for months, come home for a month and then be gone again. Basically, she raised those boys by herself. The first clue she had that what was going on was when a nurse called her and told her that she needed to get tested for HIV-1 because her husband might have aids. What a way to find out. Her husband hadn’t even cared enough to warn her. And no wonder he preferred to be on a submarine with a bunch of guys instead of at home with his wife and boys. Ironically, they named their oldest boy “Gay”lon. ????
I like the rapporteur the caption has with his men.
Gregory Peck, one of the best actors and truly most “beautiful” men that I’ve ever seen. That beautiful, quirky dark, left eye brow ???? gets to me every time I see him. The saddest movie I’ve ever seen was Roman Holiday starring Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck. That last sad look he gave as she turned her back and walked away and out of his life forever, broke my heart. ????????????????????????????????????
they dont worry about the accent, just th acting!
My god, did everybody continually suck on cigarettes back then?
Worst movie I’v seen in a long time-p
Rhonda-Dolly -Gruwell’s favorite movie ???? in her Honor RIP ????luv U Gurl????????♀️????????
Please note, FYI, that the submarine used for this film is a Diesel Electric submarine and not a nuclear powered submarine as depicted in this story. Notice the diesel exhaust during the opening sequences when Sawfish comes into port.
It is July 2023 as I write. And this wonderful movie is as timely as ever…I remember just HOW good it was. How much I enjoyed it. And how I had just started dating an idiot guy from England. I made a joke that the unofficial 'anthem' of Australia was "Waltzing Matilda.." He became extremely offended, and reprimanded me, saying it was "God Save The Queen.." Why I didn't dump him right then and there is a mystery to me…
Morning Dew
Ex qualified US Navy Submarine Sailor here who saw this movie as a boy and in a few years found myself serving aboard both diesel electric and nuclear powered submarines with nuclear powered weapons aboard, the nuke boats. During our patrols this movie was discussed by me and other crewmen with sincere concern because we knew if the "stuff hit the fan " topside, our families could have been its causalities and that we would have a good chance of surviving. That really didn't sit to well with us and most of us would have preferred to have been killed instead of our families so we lived this nightmare of "what if?", and perform our duties and try not to dwell on this real possible scenario. The détente and policy of "MAD" with the Soviet Union, Mutually Assured Destruction, has kept us, and them, from this nightmare from ever occurring and as we figured, they love their children and families as much as we do and as long as our leaders don't lose their minds or control, we should be OK. Let's hope it stays that way for many, many years to come.
The ONLY hope w e have is Jesus…(John 10:10) "The devil comes to steal, kill and destroy, BUT I(Jesus) have come to give you life, more abundantly. I know that when by body dies, my soul/spirit will spend eternity in heaven with Jesus, Father God Holy Spirit and all others who have acknowledged Him as Lord and Savior. Time is short…there will be a short window of Gods glory being poured out and millions coming into that relationship with Jesus. THEN the end will come in a way you won't anticipate. So don't wait, receive His Love and grace and forgiveness now…Holy Spirit will come inside you and help you navigate until we are taken up to heaven to be with Him forever. John 14:2-3- "In My Fathers house are dwelling places, if it were not so I would have told you, because I am going thr=ere to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back again and I will take you to Myself, so that where I am (heaven)you may be also." Hallelujah! I can't wait, won't you all join us?
In 1960 Australia had population of 10-12 million people. With 5 months of survival time, surely the entire population could have been mobilized to build underground cities. Now, today in 2023, America has no civil defense (while the Russians do) and no underground sites for almost the entire population – the wealthy certainly do. The H-bomb warmongering, nuclear brinksmanship and the atomic saber-rattling has been going on for 18 months – the Cuban Missile Crisis went on for 2-3 weeks. The duration of this nuclear crisis is unprecedented in human history. Jesus Christ, this atomic precipice, this Atomic Clock is frozen at one minute to midnight. We are just sitting ducks for the elegantly-dressed and well-coiffured lunatics who will end the world.
Cool but depressing movie!
Remember, reading somewhere that actually use an Australian sub for the movie
It's a good movie but they say around waiting until the fallout reached them!
They could have spent time digging building underground bunkers, underground food growing facilities, air purifiers or air CO2 scrubbers, bunkers to save their own people….but no.
Instead of waiting for things to happen they should have taken action….action to save themselves, their people, and their history.
"There's still time, brother."
I collect antique radios and always loved that 1958 Zenith Transoceanic shortwave portable in the beginning light house scene when the sub passes by. Definitely the best portable radio… and most expensive… you could buy when this film aired. Those things were rock solid perfect.
I’ve always said the main stars were the Coke bottle and window shade. Mankind betted everything on that. That was the last hope they had in this world.
Great movie with an all star cast that did poorly at the box office because it was way too realistic and scary for those times. Then… NBC Television decided to air it nationwide as their NBC Monday Night At The Movies in late January 1962… which just scared to death the rest of the population across the country right when the Cuba Bay Of Pigs fiasco started. We can understand it now… but back then folks were just terrorized because civilization could end at any minute.
2023. I’m 72 and first heard of this movie on Facebook today. Thank you for sharing this unforgettable experience
Fantastic film. Thank you for hosting it here! This is the only place I could find it.
