The Rains Came 1939 Tyrone Power & Myrna Loy

The adventurous Lady Edwina Esketh travels to the princely state of Ranchipur in India with her husband, Lord Albert Esketh, who is there to purchase some of the Maharajah’s horses. She’s surprised to meet an old friend, Tom Ransome who came to Ranchipur seven years before to paint the Maharajah’s portrait and just stayed on. Ransome has developed something of a reputation – for womanizing and drinking too much – but that’s OK with Edwina who is bored and looking for fun. She soon meets the local doctor, the hard working and serious Major Rama Safti. He doesn’t immediately respond to her advances but when the seasonal rains come, disaster strikes when a dam fails, flooding much of the countryside. Disease soon sets in and everyone, including Ransome and Edwina, work at a non-stop pace to save as many as possible. Safti deeply admires Edwina’s sacrifice but fate intervenes.

  1. When the inspector lady sat in her veranda it was my legal Reimbursement due. My mother Usha Pandey of Mr Aditya Misra Alok Misra Sharad Pandey as well in America not in Ranchi India however. Docspeak. ????????????????????????

  2. Back in 1989, a 50th anniversary celebration of films from 1939, arguably the greatest year in cinema history, was presented at the Bing Theatre in Los Angeles (sadly, the theatre was demolished a few years ago). An introductory evening began the festival, hosted by the distinguished film historian Ron Haver (sadly, now deseased). The opening of that evening was a clip from this film of the dam bursting. On the big screen this was jaw-droppingly awesome and had an impact on the audience you just can't get from seeing the film on TV.

  3. Thank you for upoadling this film, I saw it as a child, later a s a teenager, found a copy of the the book at a book sale. It was probably one of the reasons that stirred my interest in Indian, Asian culture. Thank you. Tyrone Power wa so elegant in this film. Maria Ouspenskaya was a wonderful actress , she was the Russian Ballet Mistress , in Waterloo Bridge .

  4. I believe this movie won the first academy award for best special effects for the disaster scenes. It's a very special movie and of course it is high lighted by Tyrone Power's presence. Another excellent quality upload and a great selection. Thanks for this gift!

  5. This movie was much different than I thought it would be! Excellent cast and just different in a way from the ordinary old movies. Unfortunately I will say Powers and Loy had no chemistry in the movie. But a definite watch and the scenery they created for the disaster was amazing for its time. Thank you!
