“The City of the Dead” (1960), also known as “Horror Hotel,” is a British horror film directed by John Llewellyn Moxey. The story revolves around a student, Nan Barlow, who travels to a remote New England town to study witchcraft. She unwittingly becomes part of a dark ritual in a cursed town haunted by a centuries-old witch. The film features atmospheric cinematography and eerie suspense. “The City of the Dead” fell into the public domain in the United States due to copyright expiry, allowing it to be widely distributed and viewed without restrictions.
You can watch the enhanced Black and White version here https://youtu.be/JjnuNqEkK_U should you not enjoy the colourisation.
Please before giving a thumbs down, most of these movies are in terrible condition, so don’t expect miracles! I use a lot of electricity to enhance them as best as I can. I hope you enjoy what I do. Thank you for watching, you are appreciated greatly!
If you have any requests, please comment and I will do my best for you. As long as the requested movies are in the public domain, I can convert to colour and upload here for you to enjoy.
This movie took 17 hours to convert to colour in 4K resolution. I first removed as much grain as possible with de-noising. After that, I upscaled it to 4K and increased the frame rate to 60fps followed by AI colourising and AI facial enhancement. I hope you enjoy the end result!
This movie is in the public domain. There are also many other uploads of this movie across Youtube channels and the archive in it’s original black and white form.

Excellent picture quality and audio quality but the colourisation is just not right. If it's meant as a b&w, it should stay b&w. Colours just constantly change from frame to frame even on the smallest areas under constant lighting
I love it. The isolation and shadows and lurid colors and grim faces make it feel a lot more like true evil than current CGI horror movies.
Thank you!! I don’t think I’ve ever seen this movie in colour! ????????
60 fps??? Jesus
Wow! Weird film! Moves right along. S????uper fabulous for old horror.
If crosses really worked this way vlack magicians would not exist
با درود کدام کانال می توانیم این فیلمهای با ارزش را با ترجمه فارسی ببینیم متا سفانه به زبان انگلیسی تسلط نداریم با سپاس فراوان از زحماتتون????????????
One of my all-time favorites! Love Christopher Lee, him and Peter Cushing. When Lee passed away in 2015, I literally teared and felt it. So much of my childhood were spent watching this great performer of the arts. For he is the imminent "Franklin March – Art Critic" – Dr. Terror's House of Horror's, lol!! P.S. I enjoy your work of enhancement. Very well done!!
????❤️????????????????????????
Could you also please make the original as intended b/w version available? For me, the AI treatment makes everything seem like plastic.
In color cool! AI has its merits.
Excellent, thank you❤
I really enjoyed this movie. I find these older movies so much more interesting than today's blockbusters.
Thank you for your time and effort in uploading.
She was warned by the Priest….
That blonde was looking for trouble…
Another good movie is The Wickerman.
Now the tvs are getting better and better. Movies are getting worse.
Hi Simon , thanks for this upload and your hard work , it really turned out well.
The cross saves.
Love this movie watch it often
Barlow or Barlowe. The name comes up again in Salem's Lot.
Tried to watch. Skipped a commercial and afterwards the video froze and won't restart. Somehow was paused since the play arrow is present but it doesn't respond. Utube is trash. All "big tech" is trash. I ignore all commercials and the fact that they are attempting to hijack my time has the opposite effect on me. Now I hate whatever is being advertised.
It's wonderful can sit around and enjoy watching a good praise Jesus bonfire . good wholesome family fun.
You have to wonder how many hints someone needs that they might need to leave town????
Only seen this movie in b/w. No idea there was a color copy. Some of the colorization is off but it doesn't distract from the movie.
When I first saw this as a kid on the late movie show, it scared the crap out of me.
We love you Christopher!!!!! You were the best; related to Ian Fleming and descended from Italian nobility going back ca. 300 years! We could have done without all the corny props e.g. constant mist. By the way, witches in New England were hanged.
Ah…The old, innocent horror movies. Full of plot holes, wobbly scenery and 'over the top' mist. I love 'em ! Thank you for the upload.
Where in the name of thee O'Lucifer did this incredible rendering of this classic horror movie come from?! It seriously looks like each frame was put through supercomputer analysis and enhanced for maximum possible color integrity and resolution! My sincere compliments.
Sorry, folks, I am a believer in sticking to the original so in my humble view colorisation amounts to falsifying the original work as intended by the director. I also think B&W suits this type of film much more than color. Needless to say some luminaries – wherefore art thou, Lisa Dolan? – will rate my opinion rocket surgery, which is the height of flattery
Simon,
I've watched this a number of times since the late 1960's and think it is great but what has also got me was the music; the jazz numbers when the guests are dancing. I don't know why the guy who wrote them didn't release a record with these numbers. At first you don't really pay attention to them ( naturally, considering the content of the movie ) but when you listen closer they have an appealing taste. I have an appreciation for all types of music and can't find the history of any of these numbers.
Some of these actors were actually ritualistically killed just after this film was released, a relative who knew someone who knew someone else who knew another person who also had a relative who was dating a person who knew a janitor at the studio who knew someone else, apparently told some random 3rd party pedestrian about it who told my nan and then they too went missing near the studio after they were seen talking to a journalist who was working for the readers digest, he also was never see or heard of again. True story.
Good movie
i cant help it but this movie seems to be better in its original form b/w
Great Job Simon ,Thanks !
Wow it looks great in colour… I wish someone would do this to the classic Marilyn Monroe B&W movies, especially Some like it hot…. it’s amazing how different they look
The dialogue is so delightful to hear. If only people could converse similarly today.
Who digitized this? It looks creepy.
