  1. On second watch I personally believe the person or “old acquaintance” he is referring to is death. He said to his “friend” to wait 1 hour. Cyranno says in his gazette “Cyrano de bergerac was murdered 1 hour after dinner. It really shows how much he really loves Roxxane. To the point where he would ask death itself to wait 1 hour so he may say goodbye to her

  2. Something missing in that last scene. At his death Roxanne says,"Ihave loved but one man in my life and I have lost him twice."

  3. Beautiful movie, great acting. Thanks for posting this for everyone to enjoy. If anyone wants citation information for papers: directed by Michael Gordon, production company: Stanley Kramer productions, filming dates: June 1950 – July 1950, filming location: Motion Picture Center Studios, Hollywood

  4. One of the things I love about this movie is how everyone in Cyrano's circle – Le Bret, Roxanne, Raganeau, his fellow soldiers – all understand not just who Cyrano is, but WHAT he is. A loyal friend, a trusted confidant, a staunch companion, a thoughtful, poetic soul… and a stone killer. Think of what Roxanne says to the Vicomte; that was a warning, but what she said to de Guiche was also a warning: "Sorry about your pet actor, but you should know that if you plan on taking revenge on my cousin, here's what you're dealing with…"

  5. I've watched both versions of Cyrano and this is by far the best. The French is excellent as well but I prefer this one. Jose Ferer, like Cyrano, has panache

  6. I was hoping the first swordsman would have chopped the loud mouth's nose off and shoved it down his throat, but of course it wouldn't have fit.

  7. The first time I watched this film, I was 12, it was summer, I had nothing to do, so I switched on the TV. It was sheer luck that I tuned in "Cyrano de Bergerac" on the opening credits. I sat in one spot watching the movie to the very end of the final credits. I was so impressed by the story and Jose Ferrer's magnificent portrayal of Cyrano, that I paid tribute to it by drawing a parody cartoon strip, which amused my sisters and brothers enough that they, too wanted to borrow Edmond Rostand's book from the library. (Back then of course, we didn't have YouTube, DVD's or even VHS!) Watching the film again just last evening, I caught onto the significance of his pure white plume (a man of pure motives). Cyrano was someone who did not like phonies or "boot lickers", who was courageous and poetic. But he had one flaw: Just because of his appearance, he didn't think he was worth loving. That's so sad!

  8. I liked this screenplay better than the stage play. And yes, Ferrer was absolutely amazing. He retired the role. But the shining costar of the film was Gordon Douglas. His direction was phenomenal. He was a rare talent and very underrated. One of the best of his era and of all time!

  9. If ever someone deserved an Oscar …. Jose Ferrer nailed it!!!! Topping legendary performances by Louis Calhern James Stewart William Holden and Spencer Tracey!!! Actors of today should take note….

  10. Superb acting and production. In one of my favorite films about this play, Bigger than the Sky, I learned that the last word in Cyrano was so important. In this movie he does not say it.
