Story of a young woman who marries a fascinating widower only to find out that she must live in the shadow of his former wife, Rebecca, who died mysteriously several years earlier. The young wife must come to grips with the terrible secret of her handsome, cold husband, Max De Winter (Laurence Olivier). She must also deal with the jealous, obsessed Mrs. Danvers (Judith Anderson), the housekeeper, who will not accept her as the mistress of the house.

I realise it will change the fabric of the story but I often fantasize that instead of the new wife being so demure it should have been someone thoroughly modern and sure of herself that would tell that housekeeper where to get off, just imagine – telling her you are a servant and dont forget it you old sour faced git and if you keep on talking about the dead Mrs de Winter…….you can pack your bags and f off

  13. I read the book twice in high school and didn't know about the movie until I stumbled upon it by accident one afternoon.

    I remember watching it and thinking how much the movie matched with the images in my mind, of the descriptions in the book.
    The characters, the house, the scenery…
    I think that's both a credit to the book and to the movie.

    Both stand alone as masterpieces.
    They are beautifully gripping and haunting.

  20. I am OBSESSED with Laurence Olivier in this movie… he is soooo handsome and beautiful!! I keep rewatching this movie on loop. It is an excellent movie, and all the other actors are absolutely great, but Olivier…oh my god…. I have never been so in love with someone I have never met!

  23. One of the most suspenseful films ever made … in the most unconventional way. The characters aren’t being stalked by a mysterious guy with a gun or chased through the streets in fancy cars or trapped in buildings with a bomb. They don’t even see strange ghostly sightings or hear mysterious voices. They all are haunted by an invisible, inaudible presence that never leaves until the fire finally annihilates it at the end. Brilliantly done.
    Fun fact: In the book, Maxim did kill Rebecca. But this change for the film, where he didn’t actually kill her and she died accidentally during their fight, works so much better because it makes the final act suspenseful. We the audience don’t want Maxim to be convicted of Rebecca’s murder because we know he’s innocent, so it increases the stakes as we wait in anticipation of how Maxim is going to get out of this.

  26. The Mansion…like "Tara" at the End. They needed a full scale mock-up or the flames would look wrong.
    We read the book and saw the movie in Tenth Grade.
    They made a major plot change (method of murder) to avoid controversy (1938, and all that.)
    Ironic, since Stalin and Tojo were already killing millions, and Hitler was about to really get started!

  35. I have enjoyed and still enjoy watching the above movie in 2022. I was fortunate to see it on a big screen. Mrs Danvers looked more terrifying on the big screen.

  37. I have read the book more than 50 times since I was 13 years old and Hitchcock film brings it to life beautifully. i have seen it time and time again !
    it is a mater piece

  40. Watched the new version. I live Lily and Armie together but the original with Joan and Lawrence remains the absolute best Rebecca.
