The girl’s father Jake (Crahan Denton) and her brothers all claim that Mary planned to elope with Joe on the night of her death, which is news to Joe. Helping to tighten the noose around the youngest Cartwright’s neck is the prosecution’s main witness: Joe’s old friend John Hardner (Russell Collins). Written on rottentomatoes.com

Reviews:
“That pinto horse and lefthanded holster are a trademark for Little Joe Cartwright. In this Bonanza episode a very careful frame is used with those things to get Michael Landon accused of murder.

The victim is a rancher’s daughter who was allegedly going out with Landon. All news to Little Joe. The story is a tragedy and the real murderer is some piece pf work.

You’ll figure out who it is. Still a good story.” Written by bkoganbing on IMDb.com

“When Pete, the murdered girls brother, sneaks up behind Ben and Little Joe as they leave their house,Pete threatens them with a gun. Ben wheels around, fires his gun,and nicks Pete. However, you will notice that it appears Ben’s gun goes off prematurely, looking like it goes off toward the ground right at a sprawling Little Joe. Whatever charge the film makers used to show smoke coming from the gun when the trigger was pulled,is clearly seen going off early, and it also seems as if Ben was pointing it right at Little Joe. Besides this minor goof, i found the episode to be well written, and very entertaining. I would say that it is very well worth watching.” Written by calderone1921 on IMDb.com

  1. 11:45 Anyone think that new deputy will be the killer who wants to make a name for himself by hanging Joe? Of course, that sniveling law clerk may do something wrong by mistake or on purpose to hurt Joe but I don't think he could be the killer. Doesn't look like the type to pretend to be anything other than a pretentious lawyer. Nah, the deputy is too different. But I still don't like that law clerk. 0:59 & 24:33 He has the same sideburns and hair but they're not unique and it still doesn't seem plausible that he could date two women while wearing such different clothes with each but we haven't see any other possible characters yet. Finally they start looking for other painted horses! When the clerk opened the door, I though that a co-conspirator might be there. 35:23 "I've never paid much attention to her" that sounds like a guilty man to me . He paid enough attention to have a strong opinion about her. 40:00 Any cowboy clothes in his room?! Why would he keep Mary's photo on display? That was a bit too obvious. A left-handed holster would be more appropriate. Something that wouldn't arise suspicion unless someone knew the case well. Or saddle bags. and then she could say "I didn't know that you have a horse." She picks it up, revealing a left-handed gun belt.

How did you like the end? It felt rushed and anti-climatic. The balcony scene felt silly. Threatening to throw her off would do him no good. If everyone sees him kill her, then he hangs for that murder.

How would you have written the ending?

How about this: Adam and Hoss find that Jerome bought a painted horse, but they say "that's not enough. but, well, let's go talk to him." The girl was holding the left-handed gun belt and confronting him about it when Jerome grabs the gun to threaten her but she runs away with the belt, the evidence to prove his guilt. She runs out the front door and crashes into the Cartwrights on the street and she hands them the belt saying "It's Jerome's" Adam is puzzled but as he looks at he says "it's left-handed." Just then a shot rings out from the balcony and either misses or hits the girl in the shoulder and they all dive for cover. Then we have the standard gunfight, ideally with Mary's father being the one to kill or capture Jerome. I'd rather see him captured. They we could see Jerome angry and crying as he shouts at her "You ruined everything! Winning this case would have made me famous!" At which point Mary's father belts him in the head, knocking him out. As the deputy drags him away, the father turns to Ben and says "I'm so sorry Ben." and Ben replies "Don't be sorry, that was a great right hook!" and they both laugh. Ben says "Let's go get Joe."

What do you think? Any better?

  2. Nobody who's seen Joe Cartwright before could believe that was Joe in the opening scene. 😀 Michael Landon wouldn't be caught dead in those baggy pants! 😀

  3. Perfect ending except it didn’t show the Mary Jo’s family when Little Joe was proved innocent. I would have loved to have seen them have to eat a double portion of crow. ????‍⬛????‍⬛????‍⬛????‍⬛????????????

  4. There was a dude named Jerome Bell slick as WD-40, he wanted big boy mansions horses everything Steph Curry, he bought a painted pony and pushed damsels off of ledges, them Cartwright boys ain't goin for that mess like Benson Hedges, she said she did not like a man who rides a plain ol' buggy, but Bell might clever however he didn't wanna hug the, in the end the town found out and he tried to push another, she bobbed and weeved she spinned on him and them he fell like Humpty…

  5. Adam & Hoss riding together is very good. Ben & that 13 year old punk kid he has does not do much for the show. Adam was very fine actor and made anything he acted in good.

  6. This is a great episode! I just watched it for the first time. Not long into it, I knew Jerome was guilty, I just didn’t know his motive until the end. I initially thought he had framed Little Joe so he could win a big case and become a big shot lawyer.

  7. When the girl's dad was talking to Ben in the beginning about starting them off right and Ben was just "yeh" and sipping his tea I couldn't stop laughing especially when he mentions little Joe and Mary and Ben was like WTF ????. Thank you Gringo for these amazing episodes.
