Jane Eyre is a 1943 American film adaptation of Charlotte Brontë’s 1847 novel of the same name, released by 20th Century Fox. It was directed by Robert Stevenson and produced by the uncredited Kenneth Macgowan and Orson Welles; Welles also stars in the film as Edward Rochester, with Joan Fontaine playing the title character.
The screenplay was written by John Houseman, Aldous Huxley, and director Robert Stevenson. The musical score was composed and conducted by Bernard Herrmann, and the cinematography was by George Barnes.

Why is there no sound at end of movie?????
I never get disappointed with these silver screen gems… Superb!
Uh….what happened to the sound at 1:30:00?
It always struck me that the young man at the inn, who wanted to buy Jane a drink, could have been her cousin Johnny Reed.
And maybe, just maybe, there was a fleeting recognition between them when she left.
I am presently reading Jane Eyre. This production is excessively melodramatic AND choppy. It all feels rushed. It's a long novel, and they've tried to condense its best parts into this brief film, but it's simply too much material for so little time. It occasionally resembles the novel, but for the most part, this is not a worthy adaptation by any means. Welles is dynamic but he's larger than life; Joan Fontaine overacts almost as much as he does, and she certainly does not look eighteen, Jane Eyre's age.
Such a pity the last few minutes of audio are muted.
Excellent movie!
Excellent – thank you.
Last two minutes of the sound track blank. Good place to spoil it for those of us who can't lip read.
Volume cuts out last few minutes! Took my 👍🏼 back!
Bummer that the sound stopped 3 minutes before the ending.
Why do they hire Joan Fontaine to play plain women (Jane Eyre and the heroine of Rebecca)? She's far too pretty.
❤ l know how yo feel Jane 😢😊
I used to watch this movie when I was a kid at least once a year! I've seen it about ten or 15 times! I've also seen four other versions from the 70s, 80's, 90s and the early 2000s! I also read the book and I still have it!😊
As good as this movie is, it's ultimately disappointing. A little editing and an additional 15 minutes could have included the long segment in the book when she wanders into the two missionaries' home.
I think "Jane Eyre -1943" is the best. But I like the music of "Jane Eyre -1970". I often watch them side by side to compare. ♥
i almost mistook robert stevenson for robert louis stevenson 👀 good thing the dates differ
Really turned the sound OFF!!!!!!! WT!
It was wonderful to see Elizabeth Taylor as a young girl in this movie.
What a great movie.Very compelling story.Powerful and convincing characters. I loved the intensity of this drama.Just a shame that the sound was lost at the ending.
Somebody mutilated the closing scene. Sacrilege!
Welles is magnificent, as usual.
Lovely casting of young Elizabeth Taylor as Helen. Just beautiful acting, and a perfect type cast

Thank you for this great classic movie.
Not so great that the audio died at the end, leaving us hanging. I hope this can be fixed.
Always my favorite version.
Köszönöm szépen
What a dynamic movie and excellent portrayal of the characters from the novel My favorite movie and actors, and its one that can be viewed many times without growing tired of it. I rate this a 10.
Orson Welles was only 28 here – 10 yrs younger than the character (Rochester) in the book, yet brought so much maturity into his performance.
