This is an adaption and the first sound version of the classic novel by Charles Dickens. During the 1830’s in London, Oliver was born in an workhouse (a refuge for the poor). Later, at the age of nine, Oliver is send to an orphanage. After being abused, he runs away and falls into the hand of thieves and learns his lesson on the way to London.

  1. Dear Umjess, of course, you´re right. We have corrected the infos already and will change the artwork also. Our stuff saw the name Robert Newton on the cover (and didn´t know that this was wrong) and so they add the infos from the wrong film. Sorry for this…

  2. Oliver is never sent to an "orphanage" – the workhouse itself was the closest thing to an orphanage that existed at that time. He was born in one workhouse, and soon sent to a different workhouse where he was treated even more poorly than at the first. When he was nine, he was sold – or rather his takers was paid to take him – to become an apprentice of the undertaker, until he ran away and was taken in by the hoodlums in London.

  3. I know we are used to a younger Nancy but this version is closer to the book. Nancy was in her 20s but she looked much older due to her hard life. Although Shani will always be my favourite Nancy.
