River Patrol (1948)

River policemen go undercover as husband and wife to expose a smuggling ring. Their enquiries lead them to the most notorious part of town and the night-club with a reputation to match. There they gain the confidence of the owner and skilfully match the evidence with the crime but before they can inform their superiors their cover is blown and they are on their own against the most ruthless criminals the underworld has to offer.

  1. A truly appalling film. Zero production values, actors that can't act with a script not worth a penny. How Hammer survived after films like this is unbelievable.

  2. Despite the critical comments below, I'm stunned at having the opportunity to see a film which some reference works write off as 'lost'. That the copyright holders themselves have been generous enough to upload it is an added bonus. Thank you very much.

If Hammer are taking requests, I'm a big fan of the late author Elleston Trevor / Adam Hall and have always hoped to see the Hammer adaptation Mantrap (1952/53).

  3. Very watchable little film and I share newhandles pleasure at even being able to watch this rarity. John Blythe was such a personable young man. I've had the opportunity to see several of his early films lately: Bon Voyage, a wartime short directed by Hitch, Holiday Camp, Good Time Girl, Dear Murderer and Boys in Brown. He's never less than fun to watch and it's a shame he didn't realize the star potential which I believe he had.

  4. What a load of British rubbish full of wankers, tossers, bleed'n cunts for actors and the worst acting and script we've ever encountered on here! Bollocks and slag to this site a fockers!! BOOOO!

  5. It's hard to believe that an actor in 1948 is not taught to shoot a pistol.  The country had been at War for 6 years and this guy can't shoot a Pistol ??

  6. I'm trying to understand Why they made this film.  Surely there was a better angle to investigate other than Women's Stockings – contraband or not.  This movie has Poor acting, very Poor music all throughout, and just too much sappy shit for a people who have had their city leveled by Nazi bombers.  It's just a Lame and stupid movie.

  7. I liked it, there were some belly-laugh moments for me and I found the female lead (Lorna Dean) quite a treat to look at – shame she did nothing else. John Blythe is always decent (yes apart from his gun skills) but would have made a better baddy; Dennis Price had that all role all sewn up in films of this era of course. I had a better time watching this than some of the slicker (and less charming) offerings of today.
