  1. East Harlem today is a mix of all races who earn incomes from low to high. The rents range from $300 in the NYCHA projects to $4000 per month for one bedroom apts. This community is targeted by NYC real estate interests to accommodate high income families within the next 50 yrs. It was an old Italian ghetto until the arrival of Hispanics from the Caribbean during the 1930s – 1950s. Some of the brownstone properties are priced in the millions. It s Manhattan so anything goes in terms of the inflated unreasonably highly priced real estate market.

  2. Excellent movie, and as relevent today as it was nearly 60 years ago, with young savages still knifing each other and do-gooders still excusing and mitigating their actions. Sterling performance by Burt Lancaster. Frankenheimer also directed Big Burtie in `The Train', another of my favourite movies. Thanks very much.

  3. I really love this movie I think it came out just before the West Side Story back in the days they used to fight in the streets with antennas from cars and bats and sticks zip guns a lot of gangs back then late fifties early sixties

  4. DAMN, what a great film. The ending was a sucker punch right out of nowhere. Who could have guessed it was heading in that direction? Thank you for uploading an hour and forty three minutes of pure enjoyment.

  5. Interesting how some of the rhetoric was the same then as now. Burt Lancaster says his wife "majored in sarcasm at Vassar." Where she (according to Burt) received big fat checks from her well-heeled daddy, which presumably enables her to be a "third generation progressive" inclined to a "phony idealism" which Burt (having risen from the slums to become an attorney) couldn't afford. An early 1960s negative depiction of what would be today regarded of "elitist liberalism". Or political correctness.

  6. BATMAN WAS A REAL KID EXCEPT AS USUAL THE DIRECTOR DIDN'T HAVE THE GUTS TO TELL THE TRUTH BATMAN WAS PUERTO RICAN NOT ITALIAN AND KILLED SOME KIDS IN A SCHOOL YARD IN SPANISH HARLEM!!

  7. I think that's what we call a heavy-duty bit of cinema. Great acting and cast. Some nasty scenes. Harlem was world-renowned then as a disgrace and it still is, I believe. Makes me glad I didn't grow up there but then, if I think about it, I've seen plenty of nasty stuff in real life elsewhere in the filthy under-belly of this world. That's where these stories really come from. Very good film, dream on. That was 1961, it's worse today, mostly.

  8. Where does one begin to praise Burt Lancaster ? Birdman of Alcatraz ……..The Train………Lawman………Absolutely fantastic actor whom one is at a loss to describe such an incredible man….

  10. I think the original novel and the movie it was based on, especially the broadway play and movie musical West Side Story, on the 1957 murder of polio inflicted teenage Michael Farmer in Highbridge Park, Washington Heights, Manhattan, New York City, New York.

  11. Wonderful message . If you are stupid , vain and a a bully , or run with the herd in a murder that's excusable. The many mothers of murdered sons I'm sure would agree . Look at the result of this thinking in Cities in the Western world !

  12. I saw this movie in 1961 when I was 16 years old. It was a terrific film then, and its a terrific film now. Thank you for posting this wonderful movie classic.
