“Although novelist Charles Dickens did tour America, he never did get as far west as Virginia City so was not in a position to visit the fabled if fictional Ponderosa that Lorne Greene and his sons owned.

Jonathan Harris who was the son of Russian immigrants in the Bronx learned his speech pattern and acting style by imitating the best of the British colony in Hollywood. It certainly worked for many swore he was a native of the UK.

The astringent Dickens is honed to perfection by Harris who gets into a big brouhaha with the townspeople of Virginia City particularly its newspaper editor. Later on he’s framed for the trashing of the newspaper office and spends some time in Ray Teal’s jail.

What brought all this about was the lack of copyright protection among the nations allowing American publishers to republish Dickens’s work without a red cent going to the author. It was an issue that concerned Dickens deeply in his real life as well.

Harris brings off Dickens to perfection in a scene with Dan Blocker where he compares Hoss’s love of the Ponderosa to Harris’s love and sweat over every printed word. He also talks about his own childhood where much of his story material comes from.

In what’s been called ‘the best Alfred Hitchcock film which he didn’t direct,’ a man is thrown off a train, and when the police locate his wife, it turns out she knew nothing about him – not even his real name. After her are four men, who insist she’s in possession of a huge amount of money which they believe to be theirs. If she doesn’t give it to them, she’ll be killed.

“I have found many films just aren’t as good as I remember seeing as a kid. A wide-eyed youngster gaping at a big silver screen at the theater can be more memorable than a middle-aged guy seeing that film decades later on a small television.

However, here is one film that is EVEN BETTER than I remembered it. Yeah, it’s a little dated here and there, but not much, just mainly Audrey Hepburn’s dialog. However, the story with all its twists is just as suspenseful and fun to watch as it was over 50 years ago. I’ve seen this three times in the last two years, after that long, long absence. (Tip: spend the extra money to get the Criterion DVD disc. It is the only clear, sharp copy of this film I have seen.)

The story’s strength lies in getting the viewer involved. One never knows whether Gary Grant is a good guy or a bad guy. The dialog between Grant and Hepburn is very entertaining as the latter tries to figure out the same thing. There are lots of good lines, particularly by Grant. That in itself makes this film fun to watch multiple times. The pacing of this story also is good; the film moves fast and spaces the action out smartly.

This has to be one of the best movies ever to come out of the 1960s. I have never known anyone who didn’t like this film.”

I have posted the 1946 film, “Till the Clouds Roll By” in 1080p quality. The film itself, hasn’t been released on Blu-Ray. I could find a 1080p version of it, but it was dubbed in Russian, for some reason. So I used the English audio of the film, so it was still in HD. Hopefully, the quality has processed up to 1080p.

Overview: Till The Clouds Roll By is a 1946 American Technicolor musical film produced by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. A fictionalized biopic of composer Jerome Kern, portrayed by Robert Walker, Kern was originally involved with the production, but died before its completion. Featuring an ensemble cast of well-known musical stars, it was the first in a series of MGM biopics about Broadway composers.

Stars and Stripes Forever is a 1952 American Technicolor film biography of the late-19th-/early-20th-century composer and band leader John Philip Sousa. This 20th Century Fox feature was produced by Lamar Trotti, directed by Henry Koster, and stars Clifton Webb, Debra Paget, Robert Wagner, and Ruth Hussey. The film’s title is taken from Sousa’s “The Stars and Stripes Forever”, which has become the best known of his military marches.[2]

While the film’s storyline is loosely based on Sousa’s autobiography Marching Along, the film takes considerable liberties and dramatic license, often expanding and examining themes and passages from Sousa’s book. Two examples: In the film, Private Willie Little (Robert Wagner), is credited with inventing the Sousaphone and naming it after his mentor, but in reality Sousa himself designed the instrument. The inspiration for the film’s title march is depicted in a scene with a voice over by Webb quoting Sousa’s actual description of its creation while he was aboard ship recovering from typhoid fever. In reality, having learned of the sudden death of his band’s manager, Sousa and his wife canceled their European vacation and were returning to the U.S. by steamship when the march came to him.

In the 1890s, Sergeant Major John Philip Sousa, the director of the United States Marine Band, leaves the Marine Corps after his enlistment expires to form his own band. He must do so because he is not paid enough by the Corps to provide for his wife Jennie (Ruth Hussey) and their three children. As a favor for his splendid service, he is allowed to take along Private Willie Little (Robert Wagner), who has invented and plays a new instrument, the “Sousaphone”.

Willie persuades Sousa to go with him to a “concert” where some of Sousa’s songs will be performed. In fact, it is a rowdy music hall, where Willie’s girlfriend, Lily Becker (Debra Paget), is one of the performers. When the police raid the place for indecency (by 1890s standards), the trio barely manage to get away. Willie and Lily immediately begin to fit right in, eventually becoming an extension of the Sousa family.

Sousa forms his band and selects only the finest musicians from around the world. He firmly discourages the married men in the band from bringing their wives along on tour. However, Willie and Lily are deeply in love and are secretly married and tour together in the new band. Late one night, Sousa is shocked when he spots Willie sneaking into Lily’s train compartment. Sousa’s wife has to let him in on their secret.

Sousa’s contract to perform at the Atlanta, Georgia Cotton States and International Exposition in 1895 is canceled by Colonel Randolph (Finlay Currie) because both previous bands proved to be unpopular at the exposition. Sousa heads south anyway. His musicians strike up “Dixie” as the band marches onto the exposition grounds, putting the large crowd in a jubilant, receptive mood. The playlist for Sousa’s twice-daily concerts is announced, and it includes “Dixie”, to be played as often as possible and for all encores. Sousa and his band are heartily welcomed to the Atlanta exposition.

Sousa and his band tour the world, and he is honored with medals by the crowned heads of Europe. When the USS Maine is sunk by an explosion in Havana harbor, precipitating the Spanish–American War, both Willie and Sousa reenlist in the Marine Corps. However, Sousa is kept out of the actual fighting and instead is forced to go on a sea voyage to recover from a bout of typhoid fever. At sea, he begins a new march inspired by the war.

During the rehearsal of Sousa’s new operetta El Capitan, starring Lily, the Sousas receive a letter from Willie in Cuba in which he reveals he was wounded in the knee (his lower left leg is later amputated). Following the end of the war, Willie returns home and recuperates at the Brooklyn Navy Yard Hospital. Willie and Lily attend a small weekly concert held at the hospital. As a surprise, the curtain opens and Sousa and his 50-piece band are revealed. Sousa calls upon Willie to rejoin them on his Sousaphone in a concert for the wounded veterans, their families, and the medical staff. Sousa announces that he has written a new march for all the veterans of the war and that this performance will be its debut.

The band launches into the film’s title march, as we move forward in time to the present day. Battalions of uniformed U.S. Marines march in formation to the martial music. In modern Washington D.C., the ghostly spirit of Sousa leads the United States Marine Band while they perform “The Stars and Stripes Forever” to its rousing conclusion.

When Sergeant Keenan Wynn and an army patrol find Little Joe on the trail with different clothes and an army horse, he’s taken to the fort where the Captain Douglas Dick says it’s him. Joe manages to persuade Keenan Wynn to try and contact the Ponderosa to verify his identity.

Landon might not have made it, but for Keenan Wynn’s help and for the fact the doppleganger Landon got a bit greedy and decided to hang around and try to cash a bank letter of credit that Lorne Greene gave his son to cash with banker Hugh Sanders.

“I like this episode very much, mainly because of the intricate plot and the suspense of it. In it Michael Landon plays Little Joe and the mean and crooked Cpl. Angus Borden, a former soldier; Borden is in cahoots with a mean and crooked Captain Merced who is played by Douglas Dick. Keenan Wynn portrays a boisterous and stubborn Sergeant O’Rourke. Joe Turkel provides humor as he plays the part of the drunk Private Peters. In the story, after he is taking a long trip and has to sleep out on the ground one night, Corporal Borden comes along and knocks out little Joe, switches clothes with him, steals Joe’s horse, and leaves his own with a saddle which, in turn, has an army brand on it. It is at that point that Sergeant O’Rourke and two other soldiers come along and arrest Joe and take him to a nearby fort where Joe learns he will be executed the next morning. As the day rolls on Sergeant O’Rourke does learn that Little Joe is truly who he says he is, does try to help him even though O’Rourke can do only so much for him.
