The Phillip Diedesheimer Story
Director: Joseph Kane

Stars: Lorne Greene, Pernell Roberts, Dan Blocker
Genre: Western
Country: USA
Language: English
Release Date: 31 October 1959 USA
Filming Locations: Paramount Studios – 5555 Melrose Avenue, Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, USA

Storyline:
The mines in Virginia City aren’t safe. The depth and width of the silver veins can’t be supported by the current form of timbering. When a mine collapse occurs in the Ophir Mine, Adam works with his good friend and mine foreman, Gil, to investigate. The Ophir owner, Andrew Holloway, has also hired an engineer, Philip Diedesheimer, to look into it. While in the mines, another collapse occurs trapping Adam and Diedesheimer and killing Gil. The two survivors are even more determined to find a solution. After much thought, and some arguement with Holloway, Diedesheimer comes up with the square set. It requires a lot of timbering, but has many advantages and nearly guarantees safety. But due to the additional lumber, none of the mine owners are interested and even accuse Adam of trying to find a way to make more money. But not one to sit back and accept defeat, Adam, Hoss, and Diedesheimer proceed to install the new square set in the Ophir. They test it by setting off a dynamite explosion near by. Unfortunately, all the mine owners have entered the mine to look at the new system. When their lives are saved because of the square timbering, they all agree to invest in the new system.

Reviews:
“This is a really good episode about a middle-aged man who’s cold heart started to warm. Andrew Holloway was pretty proud of himself. He headed a silver mine and no longer had to go down in the mine and he had a daughter who was engaged to his foreman. But all this came crashing down when the cave in happened.

This episode isn’t merely about a cave in. It’s about what happens to a person as they climb up that social ladder. No longer do you see your workers as people. Instead, they are just empty faces – numbers. The miners that died got no sympathy from Andrew Holloway. His daughter, who had a lot of feelings for mankind, was appalled that the only service given to the families was a box of groceries.” […] Written by mitchrmp on IMDb.com

Albert, R.N. | ANTHONY STEEL | Historical Drama | Classic Movie

Albert, R.N. – In 1944, at a POW camp in Germany the Allied prisoners use a dummy prop named Albert to fool the German guards and escape.

Albert, R.N. (1953)
Director: Lewis Gilbert
Writers: Edward Sammis (play), Guy Morgan (play), Vernon Harris (screenplay)
Stars: Anthony Steel, Jack Warner, Robert Beatty
Genre: Drama, History, War
Country: United Kingdom
Language: English
Also Known As: Break to Freedom
Release Date: 23 November 1953 (UK)
Filming Location: Nettlefold Studios, Walton-on-Thames, Surrey, England, UK

Synopsis:
After several escapes at a German POW camp go wrong, the prisoners begin to think that there is an informer revealing their plans to the enemy. Then Lt. Ainsworth, an artist in civvie street, invents a model head of a fictitious prisoner, who can take the place of an escapee, when the men march back from the bath house which is situated outside the camp.

Reviews:
“ALBERT, R.N. is a very good British WW2 prisoner of war movie which has a story so incredible it must be true. It features an naval officer and his men who are determined to escape from their camp in Germany at any cost, and devise one of the most audacious plans in history to facilitate their freedom. This suspense-packed narrative subsequently follows their adventures with many highs and lows along the way.

I’ve always loved a good prison film and this one offers something a little different; the prisoners are actually well taken care of and have plenty of camaraderie in their living quarters. Nonetheless the escape attempts are enthralling and often jaw-dropping in the way the simplicity of the thing works so well – you can’t believe what you’re seeing.

I also like the way that the writers take the time to develop the individual characters to more than just walking stereotypes. Anthony Steel is particularly good as the conflicted newcomer, but he’s given fine support by Jack Warner as the friendly captain. Anton Diffring has one of his best early roles as a ruthless and mercenary German officer. In support, the viewer is treated to the likes of Eddie Byrne, Michael Balfour, William Sylvester, and Paul Carpenter, all of whom are very fine in their parts. ALBERT, R.N. is something of a forgotten classic of its type and a film that more than holds its own against the bigger budget Hollywood tales.”

Bonanza – The Gentleman from New Orleans | Episode 152 | Free Western Series | Cowboy

Free Western Classic: Bonanza – Episode 152 – The Gentleman from New Orleans – Gullible Hoss meets a flamboyant, sword-brandishing drunk claiming to be none other than the notorious pirate Jean LaFitte.

The Gentleman from New Orleans
Director: Don McDougall
Writers: William Bruckner, Frank Cleaver (story consultant)
Stars: Dan Blocker, Michael Landon, Lorne Greene
Genre: Western
Country: USA
Language: English
Release Date: 2 February 1964 USA
Filming Locations: Stage 17, Paramount Studios – 5555 Melrose Avenue, Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, USA

Storyline:
“Gullible Hoss meets a flamboyant, sword-brandishing drunk claiming to be none other than the notorious pirate Jean LaFitte. Believing LaFitte is who he says he is and remembering that history considered him a patriot for his aid at the Battle of New Orleans, Hoss chooses to treat LaFitte like a hero and invites him to the Ponderosa. While skeptical Ben contacts old friends in New Orleans to try to verify his identity, LaFitte is accused of murder and Hoss must try to find not only the real killer but the answer to the question: who is Jean LaFitte?” Written by shepherd1138 on IMDb.com

Reviews:
“Jean Lafitte is one of those characters in history who is still shrouded in legend. After his helping Andrew Jackson win the battle of New Orleans he went back to the pirate trade, relocating to Galveston Island and then sailed off, his fate unknown but subject to speculation. It’s on that speculation that this Bonanza episode revolves.

The Gentleman From New Orleans is John Dehner who arrives at Virginia City claiming to be the one and only Jean Lafitte. He’s got the manner to carry it off and he makes a believer out of Dan Blocker. But later on the 70 something old pirate if that’s who he is gets suspected of the murder of a rancher who was robbed of money that Lorne Greene paid him for cattle. When you call yourself Jean Lafitte you go to the top of anyone’s suspect list.

This episode turns on the charm of John Dehner as the old pirate and the nice chemistry he establishes with the trusting Dan Blocker. And your speculation is as good as anyone’s about the fate of Jean Lafitte.” Written by bkoganbing on IMDb.com

The Cimarron Kid is a 1952 American Western film directed by Budd Boetticher and starring Audie Murphy and Beverly Tyler.
Bill Doolin (Audie Murphy) is released from jail and is going home on the train when it is held up by his boyhood friends, the Dalton Gang. Doolin finds himself accused of helping the crime and winds up an outlaw.
The film was based on a story by Louis Stevens. It was assigned to producer Ted Richmond at Universal for Audie Murphy in April 1951.
It was the first Western from Budd Boetticher, who later became famous for his work in the genre. “I became a Western director because they thought I looked like one and they thought I rode better than anyone else,” said Boetticher later. “And I didn’t know anything about the West.” It was also the director’s first film in color and his first under a long term contract with Universal Pictures.
In the original script, Murphy’s character died at the end of the movie, but the studio decided to change it to reflect the actor’s rising popularity.
