Reviews:
“If you are not particularly a Western movie fan, but are a film buff who feels an obligation to visit all genres, there are some Directors that epitomize and rise above the pack. It is with these Artisans you can savior that which is the best of an admitted overload of mediocrity and banality.
The Westerns of Directors…Budd Boetticher, Anthony Mann, Sam Peckinpah, Sergio Leone, and if you want to get into the more mainstream, John Ford.
Here we have one of seven films that Boetticher did with Randolph Scott and with the always excellent writer Burt Kennedy’s curt, colorful dialog. Speaking of colorful. This one was filmed in Cinemascope and the stylistic inclusion of landscape as character is on display here in all it’s encompassing beauty. There is nary a close-up in this film and there is no need. It is so well framed the characters are developed by their words, position, and posture.
As always the Director delivers style as well as substance and populates the movie with interesting multi dimensional characters and the cast is outstanding. This is primal as well as evolutionary and humorous as well as deadly serious. A rich and elegant film that is a parade of people through a place within a time when there was an individual and not a collective code of honor.” Written by LeonLouisRicci on IMDb.com.
“Indeed one of the most finest western movies of all times, a nice story line makes it easy to follow up the events, the cast makes the movie even more interesting to watch, though best viewed as cinema scope it is a nice addition to any western movies enthusiasts library, the movie includes a proper ending style in which its left for the viewer to conclude what the flow of events will be when its over.
the open spaces gives the movie a wide horizon typical of the old west, Burt Kennedy story drops perfectly on the background creating a charismatic effect for the main characters (Randolph Scott) Ben Brigade and (Lee Van Cleef)Frank, though the appearance of Lee Van Cleef comes at a later stage in the movie resulting in more focus on the other members of the cast.” Written by Acef22 on IMDb.com.

John Wayne movie, 1943 Hi Def, War of the Wildcats
In Old Oklahoma stars Wayne as cowboy Dan Somers, who in 1906 Oklahoma hitches a ride aboard the private train car belonging to oil magnate Jim Gardner (Dekker). Gardner, at that moment, is trying to seduce Catherine Allen (Martha Scott), a schoolteacher moving out west following the notoriety of the salacious romance novel she’s written.
Leave it to Republic Pictures to get to the party a little late, for it wasn’t until 1943 that In Old Oklahoma (retitled War of the Wildcats for its re-release) appeared, rather clumsily melding an oil drilling scenario onto a more traditional western setup (both Boom Town and Flowing Gold had featured “contemporary” timeframes). Perhaps rather surprisingly War of the Wildcats is played for laughs, at least some of the time, and John Wayne segues quite well between these elements and his more traditional milieu of a rootin’ tootin’ guns a-blazin’ hero.

Storyline:
In 1868, in the Dakotas, Cheyenne Chief Yellow Wolf and his son Little Wolf leave their destitute village and head toward the nearest army post in the town of Sand Creek. The two chiefs travel on foot because their tribe has very few horses. They intend to meet the local army commander to complain that, with winter approaching, their tribe needs warm clothing, horses and food. The Cheyenne have no firearms, as per treaty stipulations, and they cannot hunt for food. The local army commander is Captain George, a cowardly heavy-drinking U.S. Cavalry officer. He greets the two Cheyenne chiefs by saying that his main concern is not the Cheyenne’s needs but the needs of his own people. He also insists that he was given orders to remove the Cheyenne from the Black Hills to a reservation in Oklahoma. Chief Yellow Wolf replies that the Black Hills region is their native home and refuses to accept the re-settlement to a reservation in Oklahoma. He is willing to offer Captain George a trade. The chief will show Captain George an area of recently discovered gold deposits in return for assurances that his tribe will not be removed from the Black Hills. Captain George reluctantly agrees to the trade, but after the two Cheyenne chiefs leave, he sends his man Garvin to shoot at Yellow Wolf in the street, in order to intimidate the chief. Unfortunatelly, Garvin shoots the chief dead.
Reviews:
“Some westerns portrayed the American Indians as unthinking, one- dimensional idiots–riding around in circles waiting to be picked off by folks in the wagon train or by the cavalry. Others, like this one, are more sympathetic and show these same people as multidimensional and decent.
When the film begins, the local chief is murdered. This is a serious problem, as the chief was a man of peace–and the new, younger chief is more headstrong and ready for revenge. Fortunately, there is a local guy (Rory Calhoun) who understands these Indians and treats them decently–and he can diffuse the situation. But the town is a hellish place that wants no part of peace and the local cavalry commander (Lloyd Bridges) is a cowardly jerk-face. With the Indians on the warpath and Calhoun’s character the only person with any common sense, things look pretty awful for this stupid town.
The Indians are generally portrayed well. However, a complaint I often have is that the main Indians are played by white folks–such as Vince Edwards! So, it’s like two steps forward and one step back. Overall, however, the film is interesting and presents a more balanced view of the west. The only problem is that, at times, the characters are a bit more like caricatures–a bit too one-dimensional to be believable.”
