High Lonesome (1950) [Western]

A boy is found stealing food at Horse Davis’ ranch by Boatwhistle, the cook. Another rancher, Pat Farrell, who is engaged to Horse’s daughter Abby, believes the boy to also be a horse thief and possibly worse. Given the nickname Cooncat by the cook, the boy explains that he was wrongfully accused of murdering a man named Shell and has fled from the law. Shell owed him money, he says, and two strangers known as Smiling Man and Roper gave him a gun to confront Shell. He wound up unconscious and next to Shell’s bullet-riddled body.

Horse doubts the boy’s story, though youngest daughter Meagan believes it. At an engagement party for Pat and Abby, word comes that Pat’s parents have been found murdered. A livid Pat is ready to hang Cooncat for the crime. Horse talks him out of it, creating a rift between the two old friends. Smiling Man and Roper turn up in the bunkhouse. They laugh at Cooncat’s predicament and call him their lucky charm. Boatwhistle is shot by Smiling Man, and just as Horse is about to be ambushed, Cooncat calls out to warn him and is wounded. Pat rides up just in time to save Horse’s life. The two ranchers agree to take Cooncat under their wing.

“Billy the Kid Wanted” is a 1941 American film directed by Sam Newfield. Tired of always running from the law, Fuzzy leaves his pals Billy and Jeff and heads to Paradise Valley to be a homesteader. In trouble, he sends for them and they find Matt Brawley controls the town and is running a land swindle. When an outlaw gang led by Jack Saunders arrives, Billy has a plan to get them into a gunfight with Brawley and his men hoping they wipe each other out letting the homesteaders take over.

The movie is about a gang, headed by evil Stephanie Bachelor, which is slaughtering game out of season. Roy finds the freezer where the meat is kept, but baddie Roy Barcroft finds him there. A famous fight takes place in the freezer.

The Bronze Buckaroo (1939) [Western] [Adventure]

Cowboy Bob Blake receives a letter from his friend Joe Jackson, asking for help. Blake and his men travel to Jackson’s ranch, only to discover from Jackson’s sister Betty that Joe has been missing for three weeks. Meanwhile Jackson’s ranch hand (Slim Perkins) is learning to use ventriloquism to make the farm animals talk, and tries to convince the gullible Dusty to buy a talking mule.

Blake discovers that Jackson is being held by a local land grabbing rancher, Buck Thorne, who (with his partner Pete) has discovered gold on Jackson’s ranch. They killed Joe and Betty’s father, and are trying to force Joe to deed the land over to Thorne. Blake develops a plan to rescue Jackson from where he is being held above the saloon, but runs into trouble. Betty sends Blake’s men into the saloon as backup and is kidnapped by Thorne, who then threatens to kill Betty and Joe if they do not sign the deed. While Dusty rides for the sheriff, Blake and his men backtrack Betty’s horse (who arrived home riderless). A gun battle ensues, with the sheriff arriving in the nick of time. The villains are hauled off to jail, and Blake rides into the sunset with Betty.

“Texas to Bataan” is a 1942 American film directed by Robert Emmett Tansey featuring the Range Busters. The film is also known as “The Long, Long Trail” in the United Kingdom.

Prior to the attack on Pearl Harbor, the U.S. Army buys some horses from the Range Busters’ ranch for service in the Philippines. The cowboys tangle with Axis spies in both Texas and in the Philippines.
